Magnolia Manor is a bed and breakfast located in Bolivar TN. It is a gorgeous two story manor and is decorated with the exquisite antiques.
During the Civil War the house was chosen by Union generals Grant, Sherman, Logan, and McPherson to serve as their headquarters. It is said that the battle of shiloh was planned in this very house.
One story that I found facinating was during a meal one day General Sherman made a comment about how he thought all southern women and children should be exterminated on site. The owner of the manor, Annie Miller, (whose husband was a Conferderate soldier and was gone to war...how ironic huh) she heard this comment and it upset her very much she went to the back porch crying. General Grant was really mad about this remark and he ordered Sherman to apologize to her. Sherman did so but he was so infuriated by the order than on his way up the staircase he took out his sword and slashed the banister. This mark is still there to this day.
It is said that Magnolia Manor is haunted by Mrs. Annie Miller herself and can be seen in her room rocking and knitting. Other spirits have been seen and heard as well.
One story I heard was of a doctor that was staying in the slave quarters and heard a knock come from the back door. He went to check it out and there were two women standing there in period clothing. He closed the door and went back to the parlor. The knocking happened again, he went back and they were still there. He told them they could not come in and they vanished.
We stayed there recently and did not have any expierences but it is a lovely home and we will definatly go back again just for the sheer beauty and history of the home.
If you feel like you want to step back in time or just need some R&R,visit Magnolia Manor. Who knows, you just may see Mrs. Annie Miller.
